Ely Definitely Hard Done By

Ely City A 1 - 8 Linton Granta

It's very easy to blame a loss on a certain individual, but in some case they do affect the end result considerably.

Knowing it would be a tough game Ely knew they would be up against it. With Adam Scott, Chris Lupson and Stuart Seekings missing from the line-up that has started this season so far, and Simon Farrow having been called up to the reserves. Neil McKnight was back from injury, Jamie Smith had been hauled out of a nearly 2 year retirement and the same with Danny Arter to wear the gloves. Dale Spring (The Reserves assistant coach) was asked to be the one and only sub.

It was Linton who went straight into the attack. Their striker having riden a late challenge composed himself to hit one wide of Danny for the official to pull the game back as no advantage was gained. The resulting free kick was wasted but Linton's next break did prove to be successful.

A header won by Gareth Arter to Jamie Linney, who flicked on perfectly to Jules Peachey to put in the net pulled Ely back into the game and their usual slow start started looking lively. Linton won a throw deep into their half, Clark Green slyly picked up the ball and took the throw from the half way line, Catching Ely's defence unaware. The linesman flagged for the incorrect position of the throw but the official didn't want to entertain the idea, leaving Linton smiling at what they had achieved. Ely's frustation showed and two long balls, usually comfortably dealt with by the back managed to find their way into the net.

4-1 down at half time Ely were still clutching on for a come back. Another misplaced throw went unnoticed and Ely found themselves further behind. Jamie Smith had to be replaced and Dale Spring made an appearance, holding the ball up well as a striker. The final result being 8-1.

Ely had a number of decisions that they felt were questionable go against them. Keeping to the facts it would be unfair to comment or make accusations.

Linton played well and kept composed throughout. They finished the opportunities they were given. However 8-1 is some what of a flattering result and had good reason to go for drinks with the official after the game.
